“My Daddy” Syndrome and Sitting Among Friends Blog Party #25

May 18, 2016 by Jaime Wiebel 47 Comments

Recently, I was reading a daily devotional (Today in the Word by Moody Publishers) and it stated that half of the missionaries stated their biggest obstacle was working with other missionaries.

At first, this surprised me, and I wondered why. I was wondering what we do as God’s children that cause us to react this way. What causes others to have these obstacles and how can we change these situations.
I like to call it the “My Daddy” Syndrome. A term totally made up by myself, but I am sure it has been published in some psychology magazine somewhere. Not really!
The “My Daddy” Syndrome is very common among small children and sometimes into adulthood. We may have even said this or heard this from our own children.
It begins in childhood. For little girl’s it the moment when they stand in front of their daddy and twirl around in their new dress and say, “Daddy, what do you think?” They want to hear three little words. “You, Look Beautiful!” He is her daddy.
Little boys go outside, get out the wrench, and tear the training wheels off of their bikes and attempt to drive down the street with no hands. Turning to look at Daddy they want to hear, “You can do it, son!” He is his daddy.
Although we have all gone through this and gotten mixed answers, as believers, we often lay this same mentality down in our relationship with our Heavenly Father.

We do something we think is astounding and we turn to God and say, “What did you think?” We want a great big pat on the back. We want our measure of success to be according to the measure of our skills or accomplishments or in comparison to the person next to us.

We want God to notice the great big job we did and we want to know that He thinks we are amazing.
Then, we start to look around at God’s other children, our brothers and sisters in Christ. We notice the things they are accomplishing for Him and sometimes our great thing begins to look not so great or big OR grand.

And… we wonder if our Daddy noticed.

We get possessive over our Daddy and we want Him to be just ours.

We become like the little girl twirling in her new Sunday dress and the little boy who has just climbed another mountain and we want our worship to mean more, to look better, and to sound better.

We look at each other with “My Daddy” eyes. (You know what those are.)
In the process, we forget to take the time to celebrate and encourage our brothers and sisters thinking it somehow diminishes anything we may have done.
We forget our goals and purposes are to further Christ’s Kingdom for His Glory and not our own. We forget it is Christ’s grace, mercy, and His righteousness that was bestowed on us that has made us who we are. God loves us because HE IS LOVE!

And, Yes, Your Daddy Notices You!

May I encourage you after you leave here today to consider what your worship is, why you worship and who it is for. Are you wasting any time having “My Daddy” Syndrome?
1 Corinthians 1:28-31 (NIV) God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things–and the things that are not–to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God–that is, our righteousness, holiness, and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”

Let’s not waste time with “My Daddy” and boast in “Our Daddy” who has nullified our sins on the cross to make us right in His sight.

Take a step in the direction of growth. I would like to challenge you to find someone that has encouraged your walk with Christ in any way big or small. Praise God for them. Take the time and find some way to encourage them to continue serving Him and then continue on boasting in the Lord!

Thanks, Michelle. I think we all have to be careful in this area. We just sometimes hate to admit it. The truth is it can get in the way of us truly serving with a gracious heart. It can spoil ministries and what God has called each of us to do, individually and as a whole. It gives the devil a foothold to tear down many people. Thanks for coming each week!

So glad you are here every week, friend! Like Mindy says in the comments below and we talked about last week the harvest is plenty. It is so easy to get distracted but the problem is we can quickly lose our focus and our own God-given purpose and become derailed. In my opinion is is much easier to just encourage others. It builds us all up. Thanks for sharing!

The harvest is plenty and we need to work together for the Kingdom, yet I sometimes find myself comparing to others instead of encouraging them. So glad God loves me right where I am and continues to help me grow. Thanks for hosting!

The harvest is plenty. God has called each us us to a different part of the body. It is our job to support and encourage each of those parts. Working together as Christ as our head. Thank you for sharing here, Mindy.

Mine and mine alone – – as individuals we can feel this way about God, but we must realize others feel this way too. We are "Special" in His eyes, but others share in being God's favorites. As we get older and more mature, we get over being jealous and just take God like He is – our own personal God. (smile.) Thank you for sharing with us here at Tell me a Story.

You have nailed it, Hazel. Jealousy and Pride can consume a ministry and it is not only detrimental to the body as a whole but to furthering the kingdom of God. People don't want a part of that. They can get it anywhere. I am with you, I believe we can have our own personal relationship that is completely unique to us and God does find us all special for the uniqueness and giftedness that He has given us and I love that about Him. I hope we would be able to celebrate that in each other. We will all be better off for it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us here, Hazel.

Wow, that it home for me.

Everything I have done positive in my life really nobody in my immediate world has cared. They have always put it down. When I graduated high school, my parental unit said you could have done better. When I graduated college my wife (now ex) didn't care. In both cases I never went to the graduation.

Those are the two most stunning examples. I was craving acceptance for what I had done from others, it took me a long time to figure out that the only acceptance I needed was from me. Forget the rest. There is a poem called "Man in the Mirror" I found and it really helped me. I am not going to post it here but it basically says if the person in the mirror is the only opinion that matters.

Patrick, I just want to add that God loves you. He loves you very much. He cares what you do and He notices you. He noticed you graduated and He cheers you on. He notices that you take great photos and share your passions with the world through your site. He will never give up on you and He will never leave you. He cares what you think of yourself even when no one else seems to notice. I often think of the Jesus being rejected in His own hometown. The people thought they knew Him and so they rejected Him and they missed who He really was. A life with Christ can give you hope. Hope that you can always have Him and trust Him. I am glad you are here again this week.

I am glad you stopped by this week, Elizabeth. I hope that you will be able to encourage others just as Christ encourages you. Sometimes a different perspective is all we need to get that ball moving. I could see how you would see this a lot as a seminary student. I must feel somewhat like competition to have the best ministry and gain the most knowledge. Seems like we should all be on the same team but somehow doesn't quite feel that way sometimes. I hope you are encouraged to keep pressing on. Have a great week!

Blessing others, putting them above ourselves, can be such encouragement to our hearts. It is what Christ has called us to do. Love Him and Love others. Not just like them or treat them nicely, but love. That can be hard sometimes, but we are called there as believers. Glad you are here this week, Elizabeth.

    Jaimie,
Such a fantastic spin to put on this nasty habit we have! You have titled it well! Comparing, needing approval, feeling insecure … it's all what takes away from simply doing the work of Christ and pointing to Him.

Pride, Jealousy, Insecurity. We can call it what it is, right. We all want Christ approval in what we do. But at what cost? The cost of leading and pointing others to Him. The cost of driving people away from Him. I believe, sadly, sometimes this is the case.
Building up the body. It is what we are about here! We need to be a unit. We need each other. We work better when the body is whole, not being torn apart.
You do an amazing job on your site encouraging and just sharing the love of Christ that flows from you. For that I am glad that we are connected. Love having ladies, such as yourself, on the same team. Thanks for the encouragement!

Karren, I am very sorry to hear that. Every time I read posts like this, I just want to run and squeeze my kiddos extra tight. If they weren't sleeping right now, I would.
It is truly sad and often times we then connect our not so great parental units growing up, with Christ. We view Christ in so many similar ways and sometimes that is hard to overcome.
We have the opportunity to be that to our children. Be the things our parents were and be the things our parents weren't. I know as a parent, I mess up daily. I can only rely on Christ to help me do better tomorrow.
I realize some people didn't have great parents. Great parents or not we have all been let down by someone. People are flawed.
Christ, however, will never let us down. If we are His children, He will always keep us tight in His grip and nothing can snatch us away. I am really glad you are here this week, Karren. I always look forward to seeing you.

We do have a tendency to compare ourselves to other humans. As believers, we are compared only to Christ, so that we can not boast and so we can come humbly before Him. How gracious He is to love us as His children no matter who we compare ourselves to. Thanks for you sharing here, Lux. Have a great week!

Praise the Lord, He is always near. I am not sure I could understand a god who doesn't know me right down to my inner being. The creator knows His work and we are blessed to have that kind of hope. It can be hard to focus on the world in which we live and on the people around us and compare ourselves to them. I do not believe that is pleasing to God and like you said it can become a trap that is hard to escape. Thanks for joining us every week, Horace. I am glad to get your insight.
