Having children was always my plan. In fact, when I was in college my college roommate and I joked about being there as plan B until plan A of being a stay-at-home mom fell into place.

When I found out that I was having our first child, I was so excited and as the time approached my fear was not necessarily in the process but in everything after.

Everything I thought I always wanted was happening and the reality was very different than the dream. To be completely honest, I was scared. I did not know what I was going to do.

Then all the normal mom questions fly through your head. Will I be good a good mother? Will I know what to do when they need to eat in the night? What if they cry and won’t stop? Most importantly, I wanted them to know about Jesus and I didn’t want to mess that up.

There is a lot of pressure in being a mom. Pressures from family and friends, pressures from society, pressures from schools and it seems to be coming from all sides and the fear of failure can be immense.

In Chimene Shipley Dupler’s new book, The High Calling of Motherhood, she addresses three major areas of being a mother. We are taught to see our role as a mother from God’s perspective, to live out that calling, and to take on this role with intention.

My favorite thing about this book, aside from many other parenting books, is her consistency to stick to a biblical view. While emphasizing the family and family values, she beautifully inspires you to take back your God-given calling.

She helps mothers embrace the role they have been chosen for and motivates them to be the women their children so desperately need.

Before I had children, I was a special education teacher and many people still ask if I am teaching. I tell them I stay home with my children. “Oh,” they may say as if that role were not as worthy. Many times, I have felt or been made to feel as if that were not the most important job I could be given. God’s view is quite different of who I am.

I have been chosen with the honor of being a mother. I am fully equipped to be able to parent with God’s grace. I have been called with a purpose and have been supplied with the grace needed to carry out this calling. Page 35

Our time with our children is limited and having the time to point them to Jesus while in our influence is critical. Through The High Calling of Motherhood we are encouraged to make this time intentional, impactful, and full of the joy and the love of Christ. This formation takes time and work. As parents, we must be willing to put in the time and work.

Parenting is hard work- simply because it is heart work. When we are invested in reaching a person’s heart, it is hard work. Creating a firm and solid foundation that can handle the storms and trials of life takes time. Page 126

Being mom is the best job and opportunity that I have been given. It is truly a gift from God. Through mothering, God has taught me so many things about myself and about His character as a parent. As believers, we are truly blessed to have the best example of parenting in our Heavenly Father.

Chimene Shipley Dupler, the founder of Passions4Moms, has done a wonderful job of encouraging mothers that they are not alone. She reminds us of the gift and joy that we have been given. She helps us to not look to the world for our view of motherhood and look to God because He has created us as mothers and keepers of His precious children.

Mothering is a role that we must use to leave a print on this world and the opportunity to create world changers out of the children we have been entrusted to care for.

We must never underestimate our power of influence for such a time as this. We are part of a story – God’s story – and our position of influence can absolutely change a family, a nation, a culture, or an entire generation. Page 15
