Woe is me! Woe is me!

Today, as I picked up a heaping pile of clothes off my floor, all I could think was, woe is me. My little princess, and I say that in the most loving way, decided to go to my dresser drawers and empty my clothes all over my bedroom floor.

I thought she was playing so quietly today and she was. Very calmly throwing everything out of my dresser drawers. As I was feeling sorry for myself, having to clean up and refold all those clothes, these words came to me, woe is me. Ugh!

I am sure it is not a coincidence that I am studying some of my favorite verses from Isaiah 6.  

Sometimes as parents, we get stressed out and our kids, who are our absolute joy, can bring out the worst in us.

As a believer, I am quickly drawn to the fact that I am in the presence of a Mighty God. What would He think of my behavior right now? What am I showing my children in this moment?

To get the whole picture of someone standing in the presence of God, I will share Isaiah 6:1-5. We see this beautiful picture of the Lord in His proper place; high and exalted and seated on His throne.

Isaiah was rocked. His woe to me was not a pity party, it was the realization that He was a mess in the presence of God.

Every time I read this verse, I have a similar reaction. I am this person. Having the Holy Spirit dwelling in me, I am in the presence of My King. He is exalted and in His presence, I am ruined! I am reminded that I am doomed if not for Him. Just as Isaiah, I live in a society of people of unclean lips but I, too, can be that person.

I can spout off because of my pride, my occasional gossiping mouth, putting myself first, and feeling in utter despair over minor details. 

As Isaiah felt, my thoughts and words must be of utter disgrace in the presence of a Mighty King. Sometimes, I feel nothing more than ruined in His presence.

Hope, my friends, turns a corner here in the story just as it does when I bow my head before God.

As believers, our sins have been atoned for. The price has been paid. The guilt has been taken away.

Does this mean we can go on in living in our ways? As the writer of Romans says, “Shall we go on sinning because we are forgiven? Certainly Not!” Because of God’s Grace we are free to live in obedience to Him.

When we are convicted by the Holy Spirit of our sins we are to repent and turn from them and walk in the ways of the Lord.
