Worship At the Feet of Jesus and Sitting Among Friends #63

At the feet of Jesus. What a glorious place to be. So often I hear people say their desire is to be at the feet of Jesus. Time eventually slips away from them and busy lives consume them.

If that is you, don’t stop reading! You are in the right place. Don’t let guilt or shame push you away. Jesus doesn’t want that for you. He wants you! In fact, He wants all of you!

You may be thinking you have been spread so thin already, how could you possibly give more or give God you’re all?

Be Encouraged! Today we will look at a woman who gave Jesus exactly what was due Him. Her worship at His feet and found this to be the better portion.

You may have heard this story 1000 times. That’s okay. I hope this brings encouragement to your day and perspective to your time.

Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching.

But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38-42 (ESV)

Before we get too hard on Martha, I want to point out she was doing great things. She welcomed people into her home. She prepared a meal for her guests. She, too, loved Jesus and knew Him as her Messiah John 11:27.

Do you ever feel like you are doing all the right things, just as Martha was doing, but not gaining any ground in your walk with Christ?

You are serving endlessly. Giving your time, heart, and energy but left feeling completely empty.

Do you see those Mary’s around you who seem to be gaining all there is in the area of Christ’s concern and you are left feeling frustrated? Their worship and joy seem to come so easily and you feel like you are just hanging on.

You may see Mary as lazy. You, too, may want to be shouting, “Get up and do something.” While I believe, there is absolutely a time and place for this, it is never at the cost of missing out on time at the feet of Jesus.

Martha was getting mad at what appeared to her as a terrible injustice. She may have loved to be sitting at the feet of Jesus, but then how would any of the work ever get done?

I would love to point out that Jesus is gentle with Martha. He acknowledges her feelings. Please hear that clearly. I believe one reason we hesitate to come to Christ or back to the place He wants us to be is for fear of the rejection, rebuke, disappointment, guilt, shame, and the list can go on.

Trust me, I lived that way for a long time and it is simply not true. We see Christ being gentle with Martha. He knows she is trying to do the right thing. The good things. Being full of truth and grace, He tells her, however, she is missing the point. She is missing Him.

We may feel like the things we are doing in this life and in this world are the good and right things to be doing. But Christ is clear here.

He is our good portion. He is our one necessary thing in this life.

At His feet. Still. Listening. Learning. Living.

That is the one thing that can never be taken away from us.

Ask yourself this quick question. Are you a Martha, always doing or are you a Mary?

If you are a Martha – You feel like you are in the rat race of life and never really have time to sit (I know that is a scary word for some of you) at the feet of Jesus. I want to recommend two quick things.

Don’t be afraid to give yourself permission to stop at sit. If you are someone that has a checklist, put it away until after you have spent some time with Jesus. Jesus tells us that He is our reward and He is the better portion and I know you want that good portion of your day.
Celebrate your time with Jesus at every little step. Maybe it was 5 minutes in the morning with no distractions, while you lifted up your heart to Him. Celebrate the opportunity He provided. Trust me, once you spend a little bit of time with Him, you will want more. He is your good portion and eventually He will make your cup overflow.

If you are a Mary, encourage others to take time with Jesus in a loving and gentle way. He has been your great reward and that is a hope that is meant to be shared.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

I just can’t get this picture out of my head. Jesus. Standing up from His throne. Laying aside His crown. Removing His outer robes, only fit for a king, and looking His Father in the eye to say goodbye.

Leaving comfort. Leaving honor. Leaving privilege.

To take on flesh. To walk and live among us.

An actual account of Christ leaving heaven is not given to us. We know from John 1 He became flesh and made dwelling among us. I can’t say I know of someone leaving such a privilege to privilege others.

But the greatest news doesn’t just end there. If I met you I may say it is a privilege to meet you. But this is beyond that kind of privilege.

Romans 5:1-2 says, Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.

Jesus didn’t just lay His privilege aside for us to have the honor to meet with Him. He poured His grace out on top of that.

Jesus chose to dwell among us so He could fulfill His Father’s will. Hebrews 4:3 tells us His works have been finished since the creation of the world. The plan now fulfilled through Christ Jesus.

As I sit before God on this matter, I am completely humbled.

Not only did Christ lay His privilege aside but He poured it out on those who believe.

What are those who choose to believe and put their trust and faith in Christ privileged to?

Here is a small sampling.

Romans 5: 1-2 says we are made right in God’s sight by our faith. Our relationship is no longer that of someone in rebellion to God. We can live in peace with God and we will share in His glory.

1 Peter 4:16 says we are privileged to be called by His name.

Revelation 2:7 says we will be granted the right to eat from the Tree of Life.

Romans 8:17 says to the children of God, you shall be the heirs of God. And co-heirs with Christ.

Ephesians 3:7 By God’s grace and mighty power, I have been given the privilege of serving him by spreading this Good News. NLT

Galatians 5:1 says, it is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. NIV

Co-heir to the King of Kings. Life Everlasting in His Glorious Presence. Peace. To be called His children. Servanthood. Freedom. Privilege.

If this time of the year is not feeling quite so wonderful to you or you are feeling the pressures of all the hustle and bustle.

Take a step back. We are celebrating the coming of a King! That is wonderful!

Take a moment to re-read just a small part of what you are and what you have in Christ. Rest in Him this holiday season.

Co-heir to the King of Kings. Life Everlasting in His Glorious Presence. Peace. To be called His children. Servanthood. Freedom. Privilege.

This cannot be taken from us. This does not depend on our circumstances or how we are feeling at this moment. This is based on Christ and His faithfulness to us.

If you are not at a place where you think that you have taken that step to give your faith and trust to Christ, be assured that what you can have with Him is real. It is everlasting. It is binding.

He Became Flesh and Sitting Among Friends #55

He Became Flesh

The Word. Jesus. Left His heavenly home to make His dwelling among us. He became flesh so that He might walk with us and experience life with us.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

This is one of my favorite verses (I know, I say that about most of them.)

I can soak in this verse because we are not talking about a God that was untouchable or unreachable.

We are talking about a God that knew, for us to be like Him, He needed to become like us, in the flesh.

He had to be made like them

For this reason, he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Hebrews 2:17

This is the part that pulls so deeply at my heart about this verse. He left His Heavenly home. The Throne. His robes. His crown. All His privileges. He laid them aside to be like us.

I can barely wrap my head around those facts. The love that exudes from that kind of sacrifice.

To make His way to earth. The lowliest and humbling of all places. To become a babe wrapped in flesh, swaddled in cloth and laid in the cattle’s trough.

Born to a young betrothed girl. Fathered by a man who was quite removed from his royal lineage serving as a carpenter. As they traveled back to their hometown of Bethlehem only to discover there was no place for them to start their new life.

As I think of that sweet baby’s face, so innocent and fragile, yet, at the same time, the only begotten Son of God.

For what? For a time. To make His dwelling among us. The undeserving but deeply loved.

He wanted to take up residence right in our midst so that we could know Him. So that we would have the opportunity to come back to Him. So we could be free from the bondage of sin and death that reigned in our hearts and we were so desperately destined to face.

His way made complete

This is the God that would not leave His people no matter how often they rejected Him. So many times they rebelled and turned to their own ways. So often He provided them the opportunity to repent and turn back to Him.

His way made complete in the beginning, allows us to not only have peace and hope of a future but rest and assurance in the now. We don’t have to wonder if what He did what enough because we can be confident that what He did, when He made His dwelling among us, was sufficient for all.

You and I, if we choose Him and if you choose to trust Him, can look at the babe in the manger and know that He is the king that gave it all up for a time, for us. He chose us so we could choose Him.

We no longer must look at the sweet babe in the manger and picture Jesus in that way. Although it is great to reflect on the sacrifice that He made for us there His work and His humbling beginning was only part of the story.

Jesus now sits on the throne. One day, we are told in Philippians 2:9-10 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Every Knee Will Bow

One of my favorite pastor friends would often remind us of this day. The day that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

The question is not whether we will bend a knee the real questions is when. Will we choose to bend it now and have eternal life through Him or will we have to be eternally separated from Him and still bend our knee to Him?

Friends, He came, He lived and made His dwelling among us to conquer what we could never do on our own. He conquered sin and death and because of that, we can have life in Him.

John the Baptist was sent to lead the way. He was sent to be the light of His coming. Someday, He will return and until then we are to reflect His light so that others may see Him. May we be the light that points to Jesus this Christmas.

If you have not yet made the decision to bend your knee to God or you are uncertain, you can be sure today by praying to God.

Admit to Him you are a sinner and you know that your wrongdoings separate you and Him.

Believe that when Christ came to make His dwelling among us He did it for you. Believe that He died on the cross and rose from the dead so that you could live with Him forever as King over your life.

It’s Time to Surrender & Sitting Among Friends #46

Thank you for joining me for this mini-series in honor of National Pregnancy Loss and Miscarriage Month. I hope you enjoy it and I hope it encourages your heart.

Shocked, could be the word to describe this unexplainable loss. In a matter of one minute, I went from having two babies to have none.

Why did I need to think this over? What was there to think about? I just wanted it all to go away. The hurt, The overwhelmed feelings, the confusion, the… I didn’t know what.

I wanted to remedy the situation immediately but because of a previous emergency C-section to resolve this immediately would put my life at risk because of the stage of pregnancy I was in.

One week. I had to wait. For the right doctors to be available. One week.

There I was, sitting curled up on my bed with no answers. They tried. They were twins and they are fragile. But those answers didn’t satisfy me.

I had wanted certain answers. How did they miss this? Why, with all the modern technology, did they miss this? Why? Why? Why?

I felt so many things. I felt outside my body watching the whole thing happen to this person I thought I recognized. I was certain that everyone around could sense my pain and they were all looking at me. With no words just empty stares.

The pain and the hurt, as if my heart was torn into a million pieces. I had suddenly grown a heart for not one more but two.

Would I ever get to see their faces? Hold their tiny little hands? Count their bitty toes? Kiss their little bellies?

Prayers of desperation. Prayers of dedication. Prayers of cooperation.

I had them all.

At this time in my life, I had created some distance between God and myself. Sure I could play the “good Christian Girl” but I was busy. Busy with life. Busy with my control. Busy being who I thought I was. Just busy.

Through all the tears, I decided to curl into my Bible. Certainly, God would have a word for me.

Then I came across this verse.

Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Prayer, I could do, but can’t we all when things get tough? Finally reaching out to the God I had pushed far from my heart.

Sure, I could serve on Sundays and Wednesdays and to be honest give good lip service. My real life, my real heart, they were mine and I was okay with that.

With Thanksgiving. How would I be thankful for this? I didn’t even understand it.

Make my requests known to God. I certainly could do that. Make their little hearts beat again. Make the ultrasound wrong. I have faith, well, all I needed was a tiny mustard seed, right?

Peace. That is what I wanted. No, really I wanted my babies. I wanted to hold them and watch them get big and crawl and walk. I wanted to take them to school and love them.

Promises I made. Promises. I negotiated with God to be the best mom if only I had the chance.

God had different intentions for me and my life. Just as He does for all of us.

It is called surrender.

My life had become my own.

I am in no way suggesting that God was punishing me. Although the thoughts crossed my mind. I had a rocky past, I had a selfish present, and I certainly couldn’t make any promises that I would be better than this in the future.

God, in His perfect love, is a God of perfecting love.

What I am suggesting is God knows what will bring us to our knees. It is not the same for everyone.

But for me, it was this.

One Week. The time I had to think this over. The amount of time God needed to bring peace to my heart and surrender to my life. His Timing is always perfect.

For the first time in my life, I surrendered, not only myself but my babies.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

Please come back next week to read “My Garden Prayer”. The prayer that helped me be lead to Peace and eventually Praise God in all His Sovereignty.

Then I hope you return the final week of October, I will offer the hope and peace from the only source I know it truly comes from – from My Lord and Savior – Jesus Christ.

An Unexplained Loss and Sitting Among Friends #45

It was December 2009, one week before Christmas. I had been so excited to go to the doctor to do what every new and expecting parent gets to do, have an ultrasound.

I had decided to take my mom and dad because my dad had never gotten to go to an ultrasound before. We were so excited as we quickly jammed into the extra small room that happened to be the only one left at the clinic.

As the tech apologized for the really small room but we were so excited to see the sweet little faces, feet, and hands of that new little person that we didn’t care if we had to squeeze into a closet.

Of course, all eyes are on the screen except mine. Mine were on this amazing group of people that had come to celebrate this day: my husband, my little boy, my mom and dad, and the tech (I’m sure she was excited). We waited eagerly to hear those first sounds that all moms and dads long to hear.

That precious heartbeat. The sound is a symphony to a mom’s ears. When you hear that sound, oh, how your heart melts.

Feeling and hearing the signs of life, your heart grows a little bigger to have a special place for that little one.

Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Genesis 2:7 (NIV)

This particular day was different. As I looked at the screen, I noticed two little bodies lying feet to feet. Cradled in the lower part of the womb God created for them.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. Two? Really? Mine?

As my excitement grew for two littles. I looked at the others in the room and they looked as surprised and confused as I did.

The looks and the excitement quickly faded as I looked into the tear-filled eyes of the tech.

That precious sound we so desperately waited for was not there. No heart beats. No movement.

The moment everything changes. The moment your dreams of holding and loving the precious little darlings you knew from deep within for the first time is quickly snapped away. Your spirit is crushed like nothing you ever knew.

I insisted that the tech was wrong. We had just heard at least one at the last appointment. I asked her to get the Doppler. Maybe. Just Maybe. That would work, after all, it picked up a heartbeat the last time.

The doctor came in and verified they were not viable. Their hearts break with mine as they recommended I take some time to think about this.

I didn’t understand. How was it, I was in my twenty-first week of pregnancy and they missed something? Like a whole other baby or the fact that there was something wrong.

Now, they wanted me to go home and think about this for a few days.

The feelings are none that I can explain. The loss of two little darlings at the same time. Unexplainable.

Because I was as far along as I was, it was considered a pregnancy loss. Meaning, I had to make some decisions about what would happen to the babies.

So I had to wait. I was left with few answers and an unexplained loss.

If you have gone through this or a miscarriage (I also had a miscarriage right after this pregnancy loss), I know the pain is so great. I want to say to you, I am so sorry. I don’t know if there is any greater heartbreak than losing a child.

I didn’t mean to fly through this story but my story doesn’t end there. I will share more of it next week.

Before you go, know that there is hope and I hope I will be able to encourage you through this experience.

My rest and my hope came from Jesus and I want to encourage you to lean into Him. Next week, I will talk to you more about how I did just that.

If you are at a place where you need some hope to move you to a new place, I hope you will come back. I know our stories are not the same and no one has the same exact story or feelings but I want to encourage you more.

Quick Fact: October 1988, President Ronald proclaimed October as National Pregnancy Loss and Miscarriage Awareness Month.

I want to use this opportunity to be able to encourage you with my story.

The comfort I received from Christ was not to be kept to myself but to encourage others.

He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. 2 Corinthians 1:4

The Heart of God & Sitting Among Friends Blog Party #34

You may have noticed a few changes around here. I started blogging about a year and a half ago. At that time not many people were stopping by. It didn’t really matter, though. I had started this adventure because I felt the calling from God to do something different with my ministry and I needed to be obedient.

Not knowing what that meant or how it would look, I went into this thing totally blind.

In fact, I didn’t even know what blogging was. I didn’t have a computer, the internet and I didn’t have any social media accounts. (I know, what era was I living in? It’s okay, I’ve heard it before.)

I finally jumped on my tablet. Grabbed a site and started right in.

The name of my site actually came from my first post and just became the name of my blog. Divine placement, I suppose. And my site address can from my email address. Don’t ask me why.

I had started doing this from a recommendation from my husband. Yes, the one that said to me this week, “That is a lot of work.”

Finally, after this long, I was able to put into words my heart’s greatest passion.

With a shortened version of my original title and a description that spoke the words of my heart.

Seeking God In All I Do has become Seeking God and Finding Our Identity In Heart of God is my greatest desire for myself and for all of you.

The inspiration came from none other than my four-year-old little girl. Isn’t it funny who God will put in the right place at the right time to speak truth into our heart?

I, after a year and half of blogging, couldn’t get the right few words to let people know what this site is about. What I am about. What my passion for sharing God with the World Wide Web is about.

Although, I have had this conversation with many people. It took the purity, innocence and honesty of one of God’s little princesses to lay this simple phrase on my heart.

During our family devotion the other night, which I am learning is too precious to miss, I asked my children why we read the Bible.

My little girl looked me in the eye with her sweet little voice and said, “So we can know God’s heart.”

I had to catch my breath and keep from melting right in front of her. I kissed her sweet face and said, “That is exactly right.” How do children know what our hearts have a hard time saying?

Why else would we read the Bible? God wants us to know His heart. The thought of that makes me overwhelmed with feelings I barely have words for.

A God that I do not deserve to wash the feet of, wants me to know His heart and He only asks us for one thing in return, for us to give Him ours.

Not only does He want me to know. He wants you to know.

He wants you to know He loves you with an Everlasting Love. Jeremiah 31:3

He wants you to know He has called you and He knows Your name. John 10:3

He wants you to know no matter what your hurt or sorrow is, He will wipe your tears and replace your sadness with joy. John 16:20

He wants you to know no matter what you fear, He has redeemed you and you are His. Isaiah 43:1

No matter your past, present, or future, He has a plan for you. A plan to lavish His grace and mercy into your heart and life. Jeremiah 29:11

Not matter what you think you have done to never deserve the love of a father, He has called you child. 1 John 3:1

Friends, the heart of God is beyond our comprehension. It is greater than we can understand but we can be certain about one thing. His great love for His us is beyond what we could ask or imagine.

Our Little Garden & Sitting Among Friends Blog Party #30

My blog may look a little different for the next couple of weeks. I have been really excited to show you some things that we have been working on here at the Wiebel House.

We love making things and have been working hard since last fall on several projects. I love that God gives us not only a passion for Him but passions to do many things.

If you read my post, By My Father’s Hand, you will remember that my father is a carpenter (post features one project for our playhouse). He has built everything from houses to overseeing the playhouse we built in our backyard. Which, I am excited to show you in a couple of weeks. We are working on some final touches.

I love how working and making things always reminds me of my Heavenly Father. I have this time where my head can just drift into conversation with Him.

God has created everything from the air we breathe and the ground we walk on to the pure hearts that He gives us as believers. I always love teaching the word create, as in the sense of God creating, to little kids. We try to hold out our hands and speak things into existence. They think it’s really funny to make a bird or a dog come out of empty hands (which, for some reason, I have never been able to do).

The kind of creating that God does means that He can make something out of nothing. The kind of creative things that we do is rearranging in a sense the things that have already been created.

We are reminded in John 1:3 Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made.

I love knowing that God is not only in control but He is in control of all that is created.

Using our creative side shows how we were made in the image of God. If you are not sure what that means, look around you. Look at the beauty that He has created in the tiny details of the plants growing and the radiance of the flowers blooming. His creation speaks of a Creator that loves creating.

The amazing part, He made that beauty for us. I am glad He has given us a passion for using our hands and making things.

This week, I am going to show you the garden we made in our yard. We have tried growing things at our house for quite some time and had little success. This year, we planted, and God is making it the grow.

We rescued some wood that would have been recycled in some other way. I am glad that we were able to get it because we love our garden!

I am so excited to share the Best of 2015 with you today before we turn the page of time to a new year. I have been blogging for a little over a year now. You all have shown me so much support and I appreciate you joining me here weekly to read the new posts.

In 2015 I have done several thing to the face of my site. That is always fun to tweak. I have started a Tuesday Morning Email list called Sitting Among Friends. I love to be able to sit down with friends and just go over life together. This has been an awesome opportunity to get to know people better.
